Bulletin–2012-13
May 1, 2012

MAY 8, 2012
NO BREAKFAST MEETING
“EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR” BANQUET

As most of you know, GNOEA will be holding our “Executive of the Year” banquet on May 8, 2012 at the Southern Yacht Club starting with cocktails at 6:00 pm. This banquet is the only event we have to recognize one of our own for not only his or her service to GNOEA, but to the community. Which are why, the officers & board members has issued a mandatory assessment fee of $65.00 to each member, whether they attend or not.

The banquet will begin with cocktails from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The bar was a cash bar, but Honorary Member, Jerry Groetsch has generously volunteered to pay for the cocktail hour, which we really appreciate. Thank you Jerry!

PROGRAM

Today our program was a Round Table discussion on “Leadership”. We asked our members to discuss a few questions on how to select leaders in their businesses.

Here are the results:

What are the qualities you look for in employees for leadership? Someone able to think for themselves, self-starters, understand consequences of their actions, willingness to take responsibility, motivator of others, natural personality to communicate.

What qualities do you stay away from for leaders in your business? Someone who thinks in the past, stay away from huge egos, someone who has a lack of loyalty, complainers, someone only there 9 to 5.

How do you get someone you know would be a good leader to step up to the challenge? Foster confidence in candidate, incentives, provide training, assign responsibilities, give opportunities, step back & let it happen, give a push.

How do you remove someone from leadership that is a good employee, but not a good leader? Communication to discuss alternative position, discuss in mutual agreement, fire the employee.

PROPSECT FOR MEMBERSHIP

Timothy Scott, Fisher & Phillips is currently going through our membership process. If approved, he will share a dual membership with Michael Mitchell, Fisher & Phillips under the classification of “Attorney/Labor”.

PROGRAM

Today we were pleased to have as our speakers Alexis Hocevar, Vice President/General Manager & Yolanda Johnson, Talent Acquisition Specialist both with Enterprise Holdings Inc. and Michael Mitchell, Fisher & Phillips.

Enterprise Holdings has a rich and distinctive heritage. It’s a truly remarkable story of how entrepreneurship, hard work and a big dream can turn a tiny start-up into a world-class company.

The founder of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Jack Taylor, had an idea to focus the resources of Enterprise, on the satisfaction of their customers and the success of their employees. For more than 50 years, his innovative commitment has held true, and they continue to be recognized for their world-class customer service and the way they advance their professionals.

Their program focused on how to recruitment employees, how to screen applicants, where to find them. I have attached a copy of Ms. Johnson’s program for your review.

Also, Michael Mitchell, Fisher & Philips has asked me to forward to you the attached document titled “April Seminar 2012”. He stated “As a follow up to our discussion on hiring this morning, I thought you might find helpful this brief article I wrote a few months ago on the subject of hiring. It appeared in our firm newsletter so some of you may have already seen it. If you’re not receiving our newsletter and would like to, just let me know. There is no charge. It contains regular articles regarding labor and employment matters of interest to managers.”

INTERNATIONAL EXECUTIVES ASSOCIATION

The IEA mid-year board meeting is coming up and Michael Mitchell, President of the IEA has asked for some feedback. Have you been receiving the IEA monthly newsletter? What is our chapter’s most pressing need? How many of you are planning to attend the IEA Reno conference? Are you a member of the Linked In group? How can IEA be of more benefit to your group?

UPCOMING CHANGE IN VENUE

Just a reminder that starting in April, GNOEA will be holding its breakfast meetings at Ralph’s on the Park. We will be there through the end of June.

PROGRAM

Today’s program featured speakers Bill Haensel, Stephen Spohrer, Shane Peck and Tim Todd, Gulf Engineers & Consultants speaking on the Huey P. Long widening project. The Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project is a TIMED (Transportation Infrastructure Model for Economic Development) Program project. The TIMED Program was created by Act 16 of the 1989 Louisiana Legislature, was voted for by the people and is the single largest transportation program in state history. The Program is designed to enhance economic development in Louisiana through an investment in transportation projects. The $1.2 billion widening project started in April 2006 and is the first change to the structure since it opened in 1935. The project will expand the structure from two 9-foot lanes to three 11-foot lanes with a 2-foot inside shoulder and an 8-foot outside shoulder. It will also include new signalized intersections to replace the traffic circle at Jefferson Highway and Bridge City Avenue in Jefferson Parish, LA. GEC was established in 1986 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as a small engineering consulting firm. It has grown over the years into a firm of national prominence by assembling the talents of a large team of engineering, planning, economic, environmental, Geographic Information Systems, and automatic toll systems professionals. GEC’s success and growth is based on its reputation as a professional organization that provides complete and proficient services from planning to implementation of projects for private and public clients in all parts of the United States and overseas. We wish to thank Bill Haensel and his colleagues for speaking to our association.

ROSTERS

New rosters will be placed on each table at the next meeting, so please take a few of them and check you’re listing. If you have any changes to the roster, please contact me at susan@gnoea.com.

CRAWFISH BOIL

Carl Bourgeois, Al Bourgeois has graciously volunteered to host another GNOEA Crawfish Boil at his boat house on Friday, April 13th. The boathouse is located on Lake Pontchartrain and it is located between the park and the boat launch. Susan will be placing sign-up sheets for the Crawfish boil on each table or you can send her an email at susan@gnoea.com. Please indicate whether you plan on attending and if you plan on bringing a guest.

Social media includes web-based and mobile technologies used to turn communication into interactive dialogue. Social media is defined as “media for social interaction as a super-set beyond social communication”. Enabled by ubiquitously accessible and scalable communication techniques, social media has substantially changed the way organizations, communities, and individuals communicate.

PROGRAM

Our program today featured GNOEA Members’ Edward McCloskey speaking on “Will” & “Succession Planning” and Michael Mayhall, The Mayhall Law Firm speaking on “Federal Estate Tax Law”.

Edward McCloskey’s program featured “Wills” and “Estate/Succession Planning”. As time permitted, Edward went over the highlights of what should be done to prepare your Estate for your passing. Even if your estate is modest, you should maximize any inheritances to your heirs by having a “Will”. Your estate consists of “probate” and “non-probate” assets. Probate assets pass by virtue of your will and consist of one-half interest in community property and all separate property. “Non-probate” assets pass by some means other than a will.
