“EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR” BANQUET

As most of you know, GNOEA will be holding our “Executive of the Year” banquet on May 8, 2012 at the Southern Yacht Club starting with cocktails at 6:00 pm. Which are why, the officers & board members has issued a mandatory assessment fee of $65.00 to each member, whether they attend or not.

The banquet will begin with cocktails from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The bar was a cash bar, but Honorary Member, Jerry Groetsch has generously volunteered to pay for the cocktail hour, which we really appreciate. Thank you Jerry!

PROGRAM

Today our program was a Round Table discussion on “Leadership”. We asked our members to discuss a few questions on how to select leaders in their businesses.

Here are the results:

What are the qualities you look for in employees for leadership? Someone able to think for themselves, self-starters, understand consequences of their actions, willingness to take responsibility, motivator of others, natural personality to communicate.

What qualities do you stay away from for leaders in your business? Someone who thinks in the past, stay away from huge egos, someone who has a lack of loyalty, complainers, someone only there 9 to 5.

How do you get someone you know would be a good leader to step up to the challenge? Foster confidence in candidate, incentives, provide training, assign responsibilities, give opportunities, step back & let it happen, give a push.

How do you remove someone from leadership that is a good employee, but not a good leader? Communication to discuss alternative position, discuss in mutual agreement, fire the employee.

PROPSECT FOR MEMBERSHIP

PROGRAM

Today we were pleased to have as our guest speaker Peter Ricchiuti.  Mr. Ricchiuti teaches courses on the financial markets at Tulane University’s Freeman School of Business.  His insight and humor have twice made him the school’s top professor.

Peter started his career with the investment firm of Kidder Peabody and later managed over three billion dollars as the assistant treasurer for the state of Louisiana.  In 1993 he founded Tulane’s highly acclaimed BURKENROAD REPORTS stock research program.

BURKENROAD REPORTS continues to attract national media attention and serves as a valuable career springboard for Tulane students. Since the inception of this academic program, more than 550 students have moved on to positions in investment related fields.

The students at BURKENROAD REPORTS meet top management, visit company sites, and publish investment research reports on 40 “stocks under rocks” in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. The in-depth research reports, video presentations, and conference registration information are available at www.burkenroad.org.

There will be a 16th Annual BURKENROAD REPORTS Investment Conference on Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Westin Hotel in New Orleans.  This popular event is free and open to the public and provides individual and institutional investors an opportunity to meet management and to learn more about some of the region’s top public companies.  Visit www.freeman.tulane.edu/burkenroad for more details on the conference and to register.

We wish to thank Mr. Ricchiuti for such a valuable & entertaining program!

UPCOMING CHANGE IN VENUE

Just a reminder that starting in April, GNOEA will be holding its breakfast meetings at Ralph’s on the Park. We will be there through the end of June.

PROGRAM

Today’s program featured speakers Bill Haensel, Stephen Spohrer, Shane Peck and Tim Todd, Gulf Engineers & Consultants speaking on the Huey P. Long widening project. The Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project is a TIMED (Transportation Infrastructure Model for Economic Development) Program project. The TIMED Program was created by Act 16 of the 1989 Louisiana Legislature, was voted for by the people and is the single largest transportation program in state history. The Program is designed to enhance economic development in Louisiana through an investment in transportation projects. The $1.2 billion widening project started in April 2006 and is the first change to the structure since it opened in 1935. The project will expand the structure from two 9-foot lanes to three 11-foot lanes with a 2-foot inside shoulder and an 8-foot outside shoulder. It will also include new signalized intersections to replace the traffic circle at Jefferson Highway and Bridge City Avenue in Jefferson Parish, LA. GEC was established in 1986 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as a small engineering consulting firm. It has grown over the years into a firm of national prominence by assembling the talents of a large team of engineering, planning, economic, environmental, Geographic Information Systems, and automatic toll systems professionals. GEC’s success and growth is based on its reputation as a professional organization that provides complete and proficient services from planning to implementation of projects for private and public clients in all parts of the United States and overseas. We wish to thank Bill Haensel and his colleagues for speaking to our association.

Today our program was a video on the “3 Things I learned while my plane crashed” by Ric Elias.  He had a front-row seat on Flight 1549, the plane that crash-landed in the Hudson River in New York in January 2009.  What went through his mind as the doomed plane went down?  At Talks Every Day (TED) , he tells his story publicly for the first time.  You can go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iBX7Sea-xg to see the video.

The video was followed by a Round Table Discussion on the “Best Practices in our businesses and personal lives in 2011”.  Representatives from each table announced to the entire group two items that were discussed at table.

GNOEA will not have a breakfast meeting on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, but we will meet again on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at the Rose Garden of Jefferson.

GUESTS

PROGRAM

Our program today featured GNOEA Members’ Malcolm Ehrhardt, The Ehrhardt Group and Bill Dalton, Firefly Digital.  Their program informed us on what Social Media is and what it could do for your business.

Social media includes web-based and mobile technologies used to turn communication into interactive dialogue.  Social media is defined as “media for social interaction as a super-set beyond social communication”.  Enabled by ubiquitously accessible and scalable communication techniques, social media has substantially changed the way organizations, communities, and individuals communicate.

If you would like to know more about how Social Media could help your company, contact either Malcolm Ehrhardt or Bill Dalton for more information.

NEW MEMBER

Recently, GNOEA has gained a new member into our association, Charles Eshleman, III with Ellis, Gillis & Baker, Inc. and his classification is “General Insurance”.

Please, let us all take a few minutes at the beginning of each meeting to welcome him!

HOLIDAY

GNOEA will not have a breakfast meeting on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 due to the Mardi Gras Holiday. GNOEA will meet again on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the Rose Garden of Jefferson.

PROGRAM

Our program today featured GNOEA Members’ Edward McCloskey speaking on “Will” & “Succession Planning” and Michael Mayhall, The Mayhall Law Firm speaking on “Federal Estate Tax Law”.

Edward McCloskey’s program featured “Wills” and “Estate/Succession Planning”. As time permitted, Edward went over the highlights of what should be done to prepare your Estate for your passing. Even if your estate is modest, you should maximize any inheritances to your heirs by having a “Will”. Your estate consists of “probate” and “non-probate” assets. Probate assets pass by virtue of your will and consist of one-half interest in community property and all separate property. “Non-probate” assets pass by some means other than a will.

Michael Mayhall spoke on the current tax laws pertaining to inheritance that will no longer be in effect and what new tax are being put in place.

For more information on either of these topic, please contact Edward McCloskey at 504-267-3122 or Michael Mayhall at 985-246-1700. Thank you to Edward and Michael for a very informative program.
